Vallie Winetta Woods Daugherty, 97, passed from this life, into the presence of her Savior on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Brightview Baldwin Park in Staunton.

She was born on October 15, 1926, in Augusta Springs, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her foster parents, Clarence Bert and Minnie Eye Obaugh; her birth parents, Charles and Ethel Montague Pugh Woods; her loving husband, Merlin James “Jack” Hartman Daugherty, Sr., whom she married on October 20, 1946; her daughter, Carol Jo Daugherty Brooks; her son, Merlin "Jimmy" James Daugherty, Jr.; her grandson, Eric Matthew Brown; her sister, Virginia Lucille Woods Hyden; her brothers, Erwin Woods (infant) and Everett Berkley Woods; her foster brothers: Walter Rankin, Charles Ray, Henry Warren, and Harry Paul Obaugh; and her foster sister, Cora Mabel Obaugh McAllister.

Vallie led a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, laughter, and kindness towards others. Her sense of good humor and attitude of thankfulness were apparent to all who met her. She was an active member of St. Paul's Church since 1946. Her unwavering faith in Jesus provided an example of trust and dependence on the Lord to those around her. She demonstrated selfless service not only to her family and to her church community but also as a dedicated and trusted employee and universally loved coworker at Leggett and Belk over nearly 40 years.

Vallie's sincere concern for others, keen sense of humor, and her optimistic faith touched the lives of many throughout her lifetime. She is survived by her daughter; Rebecca "Becki" Ann Daugherty Driver; her grandchildren: Wenetta “Wendy” Brown Hale and husband, Rick, Christopher “Chris” Brown and wife, Alicia, Peter Driver and wife, Paige, and Cameron Driver; eleven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Vallie was also well-loved by many “Obaugh family” members, especially Sharon McAllister Zaccaria, with whom she shared many fun adventures. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 30, 2023 at 2:00 PM at St Paul’s Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be contributed to the Benevolence Fund at St. Paul’s Church, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
