Violet Sue Gibson Willis, 90, of Staunton, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2025, at King’s Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.
She was born on March 10, 1935, in Burnwell, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Ward and Della McLaughlin Gibson.
Sue dedicated thirty-three years to the Virginia State Police Office. She also faithfully served in the offices of Commonwealth Attorneys, A. Lee Ervin and Reuben Shaw. In addition, she worked in the office for Henry Funeral Home.
A woman of steadfast faith, Sue taught Vacation Bible School and children’s Sunday School for many years at Greenville Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member.
She is survived by her sons, John Lyle Willis Jr. and his wife, Ellen, and Brian Keith Willis; as well as her beloved grandson, Keith Andrew Hendricks.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, whom she married in 1955. Sue and her husband cherished traveling together and completed nine mission tours throughout their life together. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Janice Lou Gibson Fisher; her brothers, Dana Lee Gibson and Robert Kenner Gibson; half-sisters, Mary Louise Gibson Skelton, Dollie Marie Gibson Lane, and Pauline Gertrude Gibson; and half-brothers, Don Gibson and Russell Dale Gibson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton, with Pastor David Ball officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM also at Henry Funeral Home. Internment will immediately follow at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Brookdale Retirement Community, as well as Kings Daughters for the loving care they gave her.
