William “Bill” Eugene Gilmer, 72, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.

He was born on May 7, 1954, in Staunton, to the late Charles Otis and Wanda Lazelle Cook Gilmer.

Bill was a skilled carpenter who spent many years working with Lovegrove Construction. He took great pride in his craft and was known for his strong work ethic and the skill he brought to every project.

Away from work, Bill enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also had a great love for music and could often be found listening to his favorite country and bluegrass songs.

More than anything, Bill will be remembered for his generous heart and his willingness to help others. He was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone, never hesitating to lend a hand when someone needed it.

He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Cheryl Renee Mays Gilmer, whom he married on September 6, 2014; his son, Travis Andrew Gilmer and his wife, Tracie; his brother, Dennis Wayne Gilmer and his wife, Penny; his stepchildren, Justin and Chad Bagby and Charlie Kelly; his nieces and nephews, Jeremiah and Hannah Gilmer, and Megan Smith and her husband, James; his grandchildren, Ace Tyler and Kaisen Keith Bagby and Trevor Logan, Tyler Lee, and Tanner Luke Gilmer; his cousins, Donald Roby and his wife, Gaynell, Josh Roby and his wife, Ashley and their children, Benton and Berkley and Nathan Roby and his wife, Katie and their children Parker and Weston; his sister-in-law, Roxanna Dove; his aunt, Nancy Williams; and his brothers-in-law, David, John, and Chris Mays.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Darrell Gilmer and Stephen Michael Gilmer; and his mother-in-law, Shirley Mays.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
