William Laws Matthews, 84, husband of Geneva (Yancey) Matthews, died Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Birch Gardens.
Mr. Matthews was born on March 17, 1937 in Washington, NC to the late John and Ethel Matthews.
He was a teacher with Staunton City Schools for 40 years and he also worked security for Mary Baldwin for 35 years. Mr. Matthews was a Lay Leader with Augusta Street United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching old westerns. He will be remembered for sitting on his front porch waving at everybody as they drove by.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephon Matthews (Josy) of Newark, NJ and Jacques Matthews of Northern Virginia; a daughter, Kymberly Williams of Atlanta, GA; stepchildren, William Bryant of Colorado, Derek Bryant (Lynette) of Gig Harbor, WA, Jarvis Bryant (Samantha) of Staunton, and Kimberly Moore (Derrick) of Richmond; grandchildren, John Cabrera, Anika Matthews, Passion Matthews, Sean Matthews, Natasha Danielle Williams, Brandi Keyonna Williams, Lindsay Bartley (Davonte), La-Shain Matthews, and Ali-Star Johnson, Jessica Knight-Bryant (Ja Garren), Jazmin Diebert (Zack), William Bryant III, Chancelor Bryant, Chaunci Bryant, Kennedy Bryant, Colby Bryant, Jayla Moore; great grandchildren, Lendell, Legend, Aubree, Ryker, Adrianna, Noah, Judah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Matthews, James Matthews, Sam Matthews, Charlie Matthews, Gladys Foxhall, Evelyn Johnson, Violet Barrows; and grandson, Laketon Matthews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm, Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Henry Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 206 Thomas Street, Staunton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 am, Thursday, July 8, 2021 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lucy Hughes and the Order of Service will be conducted by Pastor John Benson. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Tony Bryant, Julian Huggard, Jamie Taylor, Stacy Scott, Tracy Toye and Carson Robinson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Brown and Ernest Holley.
